Vol Fire crew, who is one?

I can attest to that. We (Wanganui) were 1 of the trial brigades with APR Filters. There ok but they're hard work to wear, you know you've been wearing 1 after half an hour. They're to be worn whenever conducting overhaul until deemed safe by testing with Multi Gas Detector, or any situation of heavy smoke presence, such as rural fire. Not to be worn in place of BA.

I cant see there will be mass resignations but it remains unclear what the current Rural role will be.

Its not going to be all beer and skittles thats fore sure. Devil will be in the detail.

Without wanting to preempt anything, The NZFS ERD (Emergency Response Driver) driving course teachers you how to prevent getting into a skid rather than controlling one. Defensive driving.
The crew have a right to tell the driver to slow down but cannot tell them to speed up.

@Mauser308 The pictures shown by sako75 Pic 1. We are not looking at these at a option, think that was tongue and cheek. Pic 2. That is a Panarama Nova mask, not used by NZFS. We Use FPS 7000 masks with integrated coms.
I'm not sure what you mean by the two sets we,nzfs, use? NZFS only use 1 type of set since 2012, Draeger PSS5000.
Air reg, mate its not a dive set, Lung demand valve I guess is what you are talking about. The regulator is in the backplate.
Your assumption that that its borderline dangerous is unfounded. Anyone who is to wear a BA mask with a APR filter is to have,done prior, a mask face fit test. Essentially a negative pressure test to see if your face fits the mask in a negative pressure setting.
I hear what you are saying about cost but they are intended to be use where full SCBA is not a, practical or b, obstructive where mildly irespirable atmosphere's are present such as overhaul after structures and vege fires.

only carry crew that match the number of seatbelts, those that miss out carpool.

Our neighbouring brigade would turn out with a police light bar in the back seat - red and blue (Now green and blue) as their gauranteed turnout for every call. One house fire they had no BA wearers FFS

yup sorry, all good. In this area where I'm RFO sometimes I've got to play with the cards that are handed to me. Obvious 3285 is paramount, but if others turn up, there are other safe roles for them apart from the fire ground, logistics, comms, etc

Genuine question not a dig.
I only ask as we have a massive resource of rural fire gear in Waipuk, 5 engines!
I've only seen them at 2 calls this year.
Seems like a massive waste/overkill

not so much fires, more MVA and medicals, Maritime, I do a lot of these with out going thru comms as my clients have DDI to my pager and phone. We live in a community of 380 properties and most of my crew will only respond to calls in our immediate area. Me I will respond wherever I'm tasked too. The son, who's in the Police, is being prep for off shore fire deployment in Aus and Canada. He holds crew Boss position in our Unit

How long does it take to get a gold star and bars etc?

you get a 3 year certificate .
then a 5 year medal .... every 2 years after that 5 you get a silver bar ...
at 14 years you get your long service and good conduct medal , every 7 years after that you get a rosette on the ribbon
at 25 years you get your gold star ... and then every 2 years after that you get a gold bar ... the gold star trumps your 5 year medal , so you dont get silver bars anymore .
and if you stay in long enough you get another gold star at 50 years service

yeah that's it. we are looking for new members to.

we are a relaxed crew, don't run watches etc so it's far easier to be a part of. I'm the secretary, really keen to hear from him/her.

Why not lobby the fire brigade to employ more full time firefighters?

Surely the insurance levies on all those expensive houses at the Mount would pay for more?

Yeah boys its a national problem :( We need vollys in in our patch too (Area 13 Reg 3).
Problem can be that some are worried about what time it will take, If they can handle it and impact on their employment.
Yep sure it will take up some of your free time, its not all about gore and fires and if you can come to a understanding with your boss and get them to be involved too.
I did 13 years as a volly before getting a paid job and I'd do it all again.
Would i recommend it - Yes.
Did i enjoy the hell out of it - yes.

Depends who you talk to. I was at ntc a year ago and they were saying the fire service has never had so much money. After the quakes a lot more insurance was being taken out by property owners
