Oh that should be good then..
Haha yeah can't beat the pager.
Active911 didn't work for us for 90% of the calls we got, so out came the map book.

It's called volunteering
Rewards are not in $$$
You could call it an unpaid job if you wanted to...
Yup we are a composite station. So we have paid staff 24 hours, who man the Rescue Tender (387), us vollies who man 381 "after hours" (5.30pm-7.00am weekdays and 24 hours weekends)
We also cross man the tanker (3811), though usually they leave it for us to take
my biggest reward so far is regularly seeing the bloke i revived from cardiac arrest on the 3rd Jan 2016, a day i will never forget. It's not about me doing it, it's about his family still having him around and his wife, son and grand kids not watching him die that day.
Most days when i drop the kids off at school i see him walking his dog, with his wife usually. It's a surreal thing and makes every minute of volunteering worth it.
I bet the fire brigade love not having to pay their employees. I can understand volunteers in small towns, but in cities it is taking the piss to expect people to work without wages.
It lets the fire brigade spend money on MAN trucks that don't work, instead of wages I suppose.
We are the first brigade south of the CBD to have volunteers. I enjoy doing it and helping out the same as smidey. Thats why I do it. It's my way of putting back into the community.
If i wanted money for it, i wouldn't be doing it.
i bet they do to, means more funding to spread around on everything else as there isn't anyone at the top taking profits out of the organisation.
More funds for training & equipment which at the end of the day helps the public, win for all concerned i think but that is just my positive outlook on it.
If you want to work for no wages and can travel away from Papakura, I've got a few things you could do. I can arrange for you to work after hours and weekends too.
I might even be able to get you a pager to call you when I need you as well.
I can't pay you to sleep like the real firemen though.
Is it going to be as enjoyable as the stuff I do in the Fire Service though?
My current job is dangerious enough. I don't need an unpaid job that is also dangerous.
Good luck finding someone.
Anyway, I think this conversation is getting a little bit off the top of this thread :)
Are you any good with ladders and confined spaces?
I've got some sumps I need cleaned out.
I do it as a community minded thing, along with Land ARS, Coast guard, Medical response and other voluntary organisations that I'm involved in, only difference now is, I'm paid as a RFO during the fire season.
And don't forget CIPSS is available if you need anything too....
iAuditor on iPad is a mean tool for online/electronic checks etc. Can store if no data connection and auto syncs when in signal.
@Mauser308 you're in Auckland?
Either Silverdale or Manly (or both) have got them set up. Pretty sure it is on Ipad. One of the Silverdale SO travels for Chubb and pretty sure he goes your way.
A group of them are stomping around Abel Tasman Park and will call him later in the week
are they part of new appliances or something that'll be rolled out once the green light button is pressed? We are supposed to be getting a brand new appliance this month so wondering if it'll have one as standard.
Not likely
Some brigades have done their own setups.
you will need to buy your own smartphone to run the tablet
We had iauditor, but have gone back to paper for gear checks.
Tablet is now used for our risk plans.
We have another tablet up front for Active911. It works a treat. Although saying that, the big storm we had about a month ago, we never got any through on it....
Hydrant locations on it helps heaps.

Give this link a go. This is how other members of my brigade signed up. You need to use your fire service email otherwise they won't accept it. One way to guarantee that you are in NZFS. If you can't find your appliance number on the list, PM me and i'll check it on my phone. Eg. Mercer isn't on the list on that page, but they are on Active911, and I can get turnouts for them, if I want. I can only check appliances in region 1 however.
From the turnout, you can go straight to Google/Apple maps for directions, or to another maps page to see all the hydrants. If you don't have hydrants in your area, you are probably just better getting Firecomm to text you the TXT that you would usually get on the page.
Fairly large grass fires in Hawkes bay at the moment
If your up here fighting the fiery monster @BRADS stay safe please
Firefighters are brave guys and get my respect !
Apparently the fire in the Ripia area of the kawekas is still going so there are 4 fires here that I know of :(
Ah bugger that sucks.
It will be interesting to see this new system you speak of. Looking forward to it..

A K41-1 at the Port Hills fire after chopper crash.
Condolences to all down there
Very sad, wish that shit didn't happen
Sent from my workbench
Taking 12 of my rural fire crew to the CHCH Port Hills fires for the next few days as relief crews.
Keen to get them up there for the experience, but not looking forward to what we might find on such a vast and complicated fire ground.
Certainly know I will need a beer afterwards.
Its been fairly windy in Akaroa today so I expect they won't have got it that much more under control.
Wind was so strong here that the fire passed the fire truck while driving along the road.......
That's some scary shit
