I love a happy ending.
Got sent out last night to search for missing tramper in some pretty nasty country out the back of kauranga valley Thames.
The guy was just going in to check out the old dams etc on Monday but hadn't shown by tues am so SAR get a call. He was not equipped at all and certainly not dressed to spend two nights in the bush , but was found and extracted by chopper this arvo, and is apparently in good shape. :thumbsup:
Me, Iam stuffed. Going to get some well needed kip now.
Just want to say to all you guys n gals a HUGE thank you for all the unselfish work you put in.......your all MINT.....:cool:

Was on the news same day as he went missing. Up here we get the news as it happens, not the next few days :o
Fire up the coast the other night, GC neighbour phoned police about it as it was neighbouring a pine forest that has burnt down years ago before.
NZFS didn't want a bar of it, couldn't get the truck up the road.
The cop that was dispatched was sounding rather puffed on the radio, must have been an uphill road not "dangerously over grown" as he described hehe
Rural vollies walked in and put it out with two Scotty packs [emoji106] I would hate to be so unfit to turn down a job where I could protect someone's property and if I owned those pines I'd be making a generous donation to the local vollies crews!!!!!

well the only bit of volunterring I've been involved in is a warranted leader for one of my boys cub pack, they were a bit short. good experiences so far some have got me out of my comfort zone (dealing with people mainly).
That's a pretty big role. Rural areas is hard to find volunteers let alone good volunteers.
Cubs need people like yourself as leaders and to guide them and give the opportunities to do all the fun things they go there for. Gives them the confidence as they grow older and the good times you are have is a great reward :cool:

Although there seems to be different rules for different parts of the country, as far as I know you have never been able to take an appliance off hard standing.
Learned that on my ERD back in the 90's.
If you have a serious accident off road you will most likely be hung out to dry. Check where you stand legally
We got balled out at a rural fire debrief after all the 6/1 and a couple of 6/3 went over an small non certified private wood bridge onto a grass area for assembly point. Quite right as a bridge collapse would have stranded the truck for a few weeks. All to save a 30sec walk from the main carpark.
At a house fire a couple of years ago, I parked to the side of the driveway with both front wheel on the grass. Got a bit boggy with all the water etc. A couple of days later the burst water mains to the house were repaired right where I had parked.
Hey in not complaining about the urbans, I was mainly cracking up at the cop who had too many donuts to tackle the hill.

I did five years as a ambo. Also spent time in auckland on the road.
Had a big afternoon on Friday and all Saturday at a fire that burned 10 hectares in Cornwallis. Glad I'm not on the tools any more as I was smashed by the end of it.
Kudos to the Rural Fire crews from Puhoi and Kaukapakapa who came down at the end of the day and did the night watch and worked on hotspots until the sun came up
Gave the ute the jandal too the station before....almost there read my pager.......happy new year and merry Xmas:)

just spoke to my wife , (who is in comms) and she said you guys do that a lot .....so your not alone , maybe a quick look at the pages first ..... before flooring the pedal ..... be a good way to get out of work for a little bit , "sorry boss , pager is going , I gotta go !!!!"
Comms can send information messages to CFO/DCFO pagers only.
Learned a long time ago to read the pager before jumping out windows or leaping fences.
Thumbed a ride to the station with one of the boys the other day. Told him to slow down and reminded him that you still have to abide by road laws when turning out. Hard to stay under 50kph. Hazard lights don't give you any special powers either
haha that is common for a couple of our blokes to, they have had a few lonely moments at the station.
the other thing that gets them is the siren. Our station is directly across the harbour from Marsden Point Oil Refinery, they test their siren and if the wind is blowing in our direction it sounds similar to ours so that usually gets one or two less experienced members moving.

so true these days and especially accurate for my station, we have been classed as a NZFS first response unit.

generally we are on board but yeah there are a few that aren't keen.
We have always had high numbers of medicals, we have been turned out to purple calls for years so used to get plenty of resuss practice but us and te kopuru are now the only two northland stations that are NZFS first response units i'm told. so if st john get called, we get tipped out no matter what type of call it is so could be quite busy from now on. it takes an ambo at least 30 mins to get to us so it does make sense, we just haven't done the training yet haha
We have been like that since the late 1980s. We have some who are fire fighters only, some who are 1st responders only and some who do both. Works well. Majority of our calls are medical and likewise the ambo is fair way from here. Paid for our own equipment and training.
We have been through the ups and downs with fire/ambo politics. We do it for the community, not to be a pawn in the political game
We have no choice our crew is that small we can't pick and choose:)

How many? We usually only have the chance of six during the day as most of our team head into town for work.
