Thread: Experimenting with Euro/Skull Mounts

Hey guys, I've been experimenting with cleaning up the skulls of animals that my friends and I have been getting. I've been Watching YouTube videos of how to do it and learning as I go. I thought I should post a few photos to share for those interested in this kind of thing!

Here's my first billy (and first solo hunt success) from last year, so I had to mount it. It's mounted below my first stag, which I got this year just before the roar kicked off.

Ah yeah I forgot to mention, the thing that got me approval to get them on the wall by the other half was polishing the teeth clean with a mini engraver tool. My daughter said I should be a deer dentist.

The goat teeth were cut right off for a clean mount flush to the wall. I just cut it with a bahco saw then gave it a sand.

If you want to use a timber shield as a backing - old oak bedheads and footboards are a cheap and easy source of timber and have nice grain.

That's a great idea! I've been using up the plywood offcuts left over from building our kitchen. Glued to show the end grain. I'll post some pictures of them when I take some.

The headboard idea is a good one, usually nice dark wood. I guess salvage yards or op-shops have them.

yeah a hunt thru old op shops etc could turn up treasures to use - I have never been a fan of full mounts - the Europeans have ornate carved head boards and skull mounts and they look real good - plus many modern houses just do not have the head space to put a full mount on the wall - rimu is nice and so is kauri and gives a nice NZ native style to the mount - totara would be good to

I've also been thinking about this. If I do a good job I might even get permission to hang it. Lol
Cutting board from supermarket. Not a lot needed to convert it to a shield.

That's a trophy goat what's the spread?

@Marty Henry yeah it is a stunner, a trophy for me for sure. But it comes in at 29.5 inches, just under!

I also like it this way myself.
Usually I do "long nose cuts" but without teeth.

With special ones that I like to stick out a little I really like those stands on sideboards or shelfs lately...

Wow @Ben_SK that chamois on the stand is an epic way to mount it. It looks incredible. Maybe that'll be what I do when I eventually get one (I always tend to get distracted by deer on the way up through the bush!).
