Thread: Harrier Hawk

I found this bird on the edge of the estuary – right beside a doc2000 tunnel - not a mark on it
Looks like it might have been poisoned – rodents get trapped or poisoned around here
I offered it to a local taxidermist – but he cant find anyone with a permit to have it processed
Its still in the freezer if anyone is interested

Best to take it to DOC, they will be able to get it mounted for museum or educational purposes

Take it to Taupo. You will get a bundle for it off the trout boys.

The fact that it is dead I mean.
They should be on the Pest Free 2050 list along with cats.
People who don't live in their (hawks) environment don't realise how destructive they are.

Australasian harrier (harrier hawk) (Circus approximans) are a Schedule 3 bird (in the Wildlife Act ) and you can get permits to kill them. Very common.

If it were the NZ Falcon then DOC ay be interested. https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/nz-falcon-karearea/ . No one should knowingly shoot those.

Yes totally different bird. Very cool, but also very menacing if they decide your chooks look tasty.
Also devastating on Wood Pigeons.

I dropped a roadkill hawk off to DOC a few years ago. They were going to test it for brodifacoum to see if secondary poisoning was happening then give it to local iwi (maybe for feathers?)

yes give it to DOC the feathers are given to Iwi for training in the making of cloaks etc

Finally handed it over to a man from a Conservation Trust who is taking it back to DOC who will prepare paper work for an educational collection of native birds - I will eventually get pictures of the stuffed bird.
