I found once you got stuck in sanding with an orbital sander and 80 grit, which is painfully slow due to the dried skin and oil, the bone itself was quite dry and then sanded nicely with 800 then 1200. Getting through the gunk on the surface was the hardest. Formaldehyde would work I’d say but 20 years aging would be suffice,give it a sand I say
