Most places have price listed, Do your home work on who use.
Work on 2-2.5k for a red.

I have had quite a few heads done over the last 20 years. Price doesn’t always reflect the job you get. Some operators have an excellent reputation and have more work than they can cope with. They calibrate this by charging more.
I have had heads done by taxidermist without the 5 star reviews and had very competent work done. What I have found though is some taxidermist do more of one breed than another and truly capture the essence of the breed. Especially the more unusual breeds like Rusa, sambar and say whitetail.
The thing with taxidermy you don’t really know how good it is for 20 years. It’s like rust repairs on your car. Looks good when you pick it up but what about 10 years time.

Southcity is absolutely right. Heres my 10 inch Cham done by the legendary Terry Jacobs way back in 1982. If I took it off the wall and gave it a vacuum, you'd think it was a couple of years old. That man was a truly skilled craftsman

1981 - shoulder mount for a 8 pt sika stag i shot - Clarks Taxi in Taupo was $150.00. About 2007 a 14 pt red stag I shot was $1k from O'Roukes, Pleasant Point. Back then I thought the prices were okay for the 80's but didn't have other commitments in my early days. From 2000's had a house etc but again few of those electrical gadgets so life was simple....
Are you sure about that Micky Duck? That doesn't seem right, I can't imagine the cost was anywhere near that 36 years ago. I had my big red done by Vern in Taupo in 2001 and that was only $700 then and that included him supplying the head skin which was $50 from memory.Quote:

Well if a typical shoulder mount takes about 20 hours to do @ about $60 hr for labour, (because it is a skilled job). That's not counting the cost of the form (whether bought or home made), glass eyes, tanning, hide paste, paints etc etc etc.... The cost mounts up.... no pun intended ;) One thing I've noticed about many hunters is that they spend a fortune on gear, but want the cheapest taxidermy, tanning and butchery.... ;) Sure everyone wants good value, and that's fair enough. But usually; quality costs.....
I had my 14pt red done about the same time at O’Roukes it was $850 and still looks as good today as it did back then. How has yours held up?Quote:

Which taxidermist did you choose for your work ?
Northern BC. On the Yukon Border. Horse back hunt. I got the Taxidermy done in Canada. Shipped it with my goods back to NZ as I was living there. Most recently though I have been using Big Game Taxidermy in Christchurch ( he’s moved to Kaikoura.). I’ve had him do 2 fallow, 1 chamois, and a Ram.Quote:

Heres the one I shot 38 years ago and also done by O'Rourkes, the kids and nephews pulled off the finger nails, bent the ears and its a bit sun bleached. It has the same peice of wood as Dundees

Some (or all) of you all will already know. O'Rourkes was brought out by Brodie Green, he used to work for Tyrone Southward in Dunsandle. Absolute top bloke.
