Where to find raw cow hides in Wellington Region

    Hi all,

I am trying to find a source for one or more raw cow hides in the Wellington region, to replace cracked skins of the drums of a Wellington community drumming group. In the past Birchams in the Hutt has done an amazing job providing us with a couple of skins, however he seems to be no longer in business?

We're looking for full size cow or bull skins that are untanned, salted and ideally dehaired. Does any one here perhaps have any suggestions of someone in the Wellington Region that can help us further?

Yep. Up Taupo way the homekill butchers charge customers for disposal of cowhides to the dump. Same will be happening down your way I guess.

Our home kill butcher told me this week he is getting $6 for a large ox hide, anything smaller has no value. Some of the works are burying the smaller hides as there is no market for them. No value for sheep hides either, in fact if they have more than 4 weeks will there is an extra charge as the hide is disposed of on volume. Just crazy!!
