    After advice

New to archery, keen to get into hunting with a compound set up.
I will make a trip go and talk to one of the good archery shops around, probably chch ways.
What I’m after is any good reading before then, about bows or beginners guides etc. wouldn’t mind reading up a bit before I go talk to someone just so I can understand them a bit better.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Not new to hunting but new to archery.

Mathew at Arrowhead Archery in Darfield is really good to talk to and get setup with the gear. I have just got back into archery in the last couple of years

Read the how to guide on https://www.huntersfriend.com/compou...-contents.html as a start. They debunk quite a few persistent myths about archery kit and will serve you well when time comes to buy a compound bow.

It's worth popping down to your local archery club before buying gear. There will be all sorts of helpful people there who can help with advice, gear etc. Plus you can do one of their beginner courses to learn the basics of archery and figure out your eye dominance, draw length etc.

To add to what @smashman said, your form is also super important. Perfecting your draw, anchor and release in the company of people who know what they are doing beats unlearning bad habits that creep in when you are left to your own devices. On this, I speak with experience unfortunately!

    My advice:
Start with a back tension release, this will help you with form.
Focus on 'blank butt' shooting, ie shooting with no target, again to practice form. Figuring out how to aim is easy once your form is good. It takes quite a long time to become proficient enough with a bow to hunt.

Have you considered trying a recurve first? They are significantly simpler and cheaper to start with to work on form and basics of shooting.

Unfortunately the compound is the easiest to master, but for simplicity trad is more fun although it does take a lot of practise.
