Just a quick question gents. I have looked on the police website but can't seem to find what is required when taking a pistol from home to the range. Is the plastic case sufficient, or do I need something more substantial that locks?.

Neither the Arms Act nor the arms regulations actually specify any specific method of carriage but any such carriage is subject to the conditions of your endorsement (B category). That has always been that the pistols may be carried to and from your residence to a recognised pistol range, a licensed firearms dealer, or a Police station, and shall be carried in a 'lockable container'. The material of that container has not been specified, nor is it specified that it shall be a 'locked container'.
Agree with stretch.
Having a locked container is pointless unless it is affixed to the vehicle.
I am thinking of having a hidden lock box for pistolas in my new truck when I get it.
Was thinking how I would transport them on the interilander if I ever drive up to a shoot. No different to a rifle I know, but the thought of them being a broken window away from some lowlife, irks me no end.

Thanks guys. Friwi awesome will look into that one.
for me , they go from the safe , ... into a zippered pouch , then into the range bag , then into the boot of the swift , .... then to the range . and back again ...
Mine are all in factory cases but then looking at travelling to Hokitika this weekend how do you secure them at your accomodation if you go out. Will take a chain and padlock
Got a lockable pelican travelling case with wire and sep padlock, loop around something permanent in the room.
Always thought it said lockED box of stout construction. Now, can't recall where IT said it. Hhmmm.

PNZ do not write law...
So the answer is no, it's a recommendation.
Not really much reason not to chuck it in the boot if you have a car. If you have a ute that's the best you can do.
um no I got bored and didn't bother renewing it after 20 years shooting pistols just lost its appeal.
Best bit was when I sold my "race gun" after 5 years use I got enough coin for 2 jigging rod sets, a life membership to a clay bird club and a brand spanking new Borwing B725 so I did OK
