Did you ever end up doing a IR illuminator?
No, because I received a mixture of responses on here and gave up on it. Some said LEDs, others VCSEL chips, and others mentioning how lasers are the only way to go. Then I also had a mixture of what range is suitable. It's just too messy. I can do LEDs and VCSEL, but I have zero experience or knowledge on IR lasers and what to look for. I did review a VCSEL 850nm on my YouTube channel and it was reaching a house 1,185m away, maybe I should give that one some thought. The issue with adjustable focus models is the need for the mounts that allow you to adjust the angle and they aren't cheap.
I've found that most hunters would rather go for a thermal anyway. I was talking to a couple of torch companies and they have said the same, large decline in IR torches with hunters shifting to thermal.
I gifted a Pard NV008S to my Dad and he said he likes his thermal way better.
Bought a torch and headlamp from here this evening, to replace that which has been “lost” by my two teenagers... Seeing as how I control both of their bank accounts, they are paying for them from their wages.
Somehow my boys seem to think that this purchase is my Christmas present, from them to me.
I’ve tried to explain the failure in logic here, but I’m not getting anywhere.
Thank you for the order. Decided to include an H25LR headlamp that has a small scratch on the switch. May as well tell your boys that this is part of it lol.

Uh, they are fine, they just can get a bit heated. Depends how old the kids are and whether they'd be careful.
The headlamp only has a 90 sec timer that reduces the brightness on turbo, there's no other thermal protection. I see in my review notes that it only reached a max temp of 51°C on my test bench, so that's normal. That would reach a much warmer temp if it was a hot night though. Just something to keep in mind.
I mainly imported them for hunters who wanted a bit extra reach for the red beam.

Compared the Convoy C8 I bought from you it feels like garbage, considering tryign to DIY an alternative as there aren't many options available.
Convoy torches are very straight forward to modify, that's why I enjoy selling them. Do you need 850nm or 940nm? I have the parts for 940nm, but not 850, that would need to be ordered in. If you have a soldering iron and thermal paste you can install yourself, if not, you'll have to decide whether it's worth modifying for postage both ways and parts. Labor would be at no charge. $15-20 parts maybe.
It's hard to say what the results will be like since Convoy's most recent C8+ batch had a slight alteration of the reflector. I have two C8+ models coming in with both 850nm and 940nm for testing with my Dad's Pard NV008S. Bought it for testing IR torches and then gifted it to him. You might want to wait until I can test these two units, I just don't know how long until my order arrives.
I reviewed this model with 850nm and it was very decent. Maybe import yourself one of those, it looks to be the same one. Here's my old review of it.
