Champion NZ axeman.
Seen that this morning. Giant of a man respected world wide may he rest in peace
Quite possibly the most successful athlete we have ever produced. RIP
First saw him and his wife doing a chopping demo in the Te Akau community hall for farmlands/Elders. Got me hooked on axes. Shit way to go out.

He would have to be our most successful international sportsman over such an extended period. Other competitors only had great things to say about him. RIP.
His legacy lives on with Jack Jordan and there are some very promising young guys coming through.
Yeah this is a bugger.
Him and David Bolstad (RIP) sons of top NZ axemen both gone before their time.
As an aside while I never saw Jason chop, I did see David do a world record in maybe the Tokoroa workies back in 93. He was wearing the first warriors jersey if ever seen. Some pretty soft wood standing block.
7 blows in 5 seconds.
Both died tragically, if differently.
Never saw Jason chop either but had seen Sonny on several occasions.
Used to follow woodchopping when it was common at the smaller carnivals eg Retaruke.
RIP. Top man gonr too soon.
Chopping ring was my favourite haunt at the Tokoroa A & P show as a kid.
Sonny Bolstad ruled. True grassroots athletes.
RIP.
He was a great sportsman NZ has produced some amazing woodchoppers going back in history one of them being my great uncle JOE JULIAN he was born in the days of Kauri tree and use to tell me stories of that era like his first job as a youg fella was greesing the skids with tello {animal fat } when pulling Kauri logs out of the bush towed with bullicks and those logs were massive taller that him and he was over 6.5 feet tall
