How about adding a bit of fine wire braid connecting the rubbers to the spikes, so you can pop them off but leave them hanging connected... never lose them.

Before you get too carried away, try slipping a feeler gauge of whatever thickness you think you need under the case in the shell holder, then crank it up into die, and see if that does the trick.

A lot of hunter doesn't seem to care much for shot placement it seems. Shooting at something that is probably a deer is not a style of hunting id ever go for.
