I reckon stock design makes a huge difference too. Back in the day I had a 308 Midland; didn't boot like a stag; it booted like an angry stag! Kicked way more than my Ruger 77 .270, my brass butt...

They used to hire planes to fly around looking for those tarps. The amount they found made it worthwhile doing ha ha. Everyone seemed to have one to cover the firewood etc ;)
