ok heres whats going on from what youve said without seeing the vehicle its sucking oil down the inlet valve guides when theres high inlet vacume ie valve guide seals are probably a bit hard but no...

another one to look at would be a m96/m38 usually can be picked up cheap and usualy a very accurate rifle

Just finished load development on one in .243. Grade 3 wood IIRC . Very nice rifle. Swap barrel to boot.

Doesn't do anything a 308 or 7.62x39 doesn't do already, but for the $800 the Ruger ranch rifles were it didn't matter cos they were cheap enough
