Kti units from cooee bay whos a forum member seem to be the best value for a straight plb i could find. Battery life is 10 years and can be replaced at around $50 i think.

The KTI units are hard to look past for the price.. $300ish with 10 year battery life.

Have ordered one from cooey bay. Water resistant to 3m should see me right in bush I avoid getting feet wet. Question how often can you/do you test without compromising battery life.

That is wrong as the KTI units he sells here are NZ coded units. In any case the delay is just the delay of a phone call. This is after all a global system.

I would also add : Get a small laminated card with instructions of how to activate the beacon and store it inside the beacon pouch. I store mine in a Hi-viz orange pouch labelled "PLB" on my bino...

Not quite, 300 max and mine has a 10 year battery life. In 10years I will have either broken, used or lost it! And in 10years I hope they will have come down in price even more

Ummmm. The 406MHz is the satellite communication frequency and the 121.5MHz is the terrestrial homing signal and you do want both. Talking to the guys in the rescue choppers they like that homing...
