Depends entirely on the reticle. The target rifle reticles are the ones that are too thin generally speaking. A decent quality tactical reticle like the Bushnell G2DMR or similar is good for all...

Open sights are under rated for close range and snap shooting in my opinion, but they can't compete with the holographic style sights.
