You could do screws like that but i wouldn't do a barrel this way you might warp it or alter the hardness of the barrel

The Berger VLD is a great clean killer of game (and paper!) I use it in a number of different calibres and it never lets me down near or far, I roll a cotton bud across my lube pad every few cases...

It is probably more to do with variations in the projectile shape. The length of the case won't make a difference.
