I haven't hunted either but I'd say they're both good places to start. Don't be afraid to pick a hut that is quite a popular hunting spot then go for a walk. Worry about discovering secret spots...

Just drive up to the Ureweras and park your car at Ruatahuna or Minginui and jump into the bush there for a few hours. Heaps of deer there. You're guaranteed to shoot one.
