It's going to be fine once it's cleaned up - sometimes the flap discs or sanding discs are the way forward and other times you really need to get a bit more heavy to get to the bottom of the pitting....

oooohhhh bench grinder -- sorry mate but all it needed was a rotary wire brush - let older knives like that show some age rather than grind it out - to me one has created a lot of work to finish...

Welcome to the forum KiwiMaverick. A .270 will do any animal you decide to hunt in NZ, so if your not going for the good old 308 I would go with one of them
