Don't know about the short fly thing. Used to see a lot of them on the coast. Did the odd puke drive too. No they wont fly as far as a duck but they can and will fly a long way if they have to.

If you are confident with the .270 and the 7mm08, why change? Both will work well out to 400yds just fine on Tahr and Chamios.
