All of the above. There's a couple of things that I've done that I'll add to the mix. A bit of noise around tucker time, not to much and build it gently. Totally ignore the dogs reactions, what...

do what 257weatherby said, take it slow and move further away if he is showing fear. Dont reassure them if showing fear as that can reinforce the dogs reaction, better to ignore and more further...

Stole this from elsewhere. This guy took his dog to the clay grounds, sat with dog in the car reassuring the mutt. After a few visits leave dog in the car windows up, then windows slightly open....

Take him somewhere open you can do a bit of shooting from the one spot. Leave him in the truck with the door open and on a mat that is his. Shoot slow strings, a distance from the truck and pointed...

Take it slowly and work up. Can even use two pieces of wood as a clapper, start off lightly and work up. The woods great cos it's not a big scary gun and you can use it anywhere.

GSP HUNTER… If you let me know which bullet you use and MV I’ll have a look in the magic toolbook and work out the best zero range for you to be bang on at 250. You work in yards, yes? It’s weird...

While i know older fellas that have always simply sighted in bang on at 30 yards, which put them about 2.5" high at 100, and 2 inches high at 200 and bang on about 250. This is all dependent on...

If you know your trajectory, 40m will get you usefully zeroed. For example, my .260 should be 20mm high at 40m for a 220m zero. Of course you need to be spot on in your measurements, but short...

If you plan on shooting past 100yds, no, no ,and no! not unless you have previously tested that method and found it to work for your rifle. 250yds? just no! (you did ask!)

I think what Pommy means is get a 270. Seriously I use a 270win and have shot deer, tahr and wallabies between 5 and 320 metres with a 3-9 scope.
