   Google barrel length velocity .223 and plenty will come up . .. . . to me . . . long barrels ( 24-26" ) are for stretching it out varminting . . . short barrels ( 16-22" ) are for light walkabout...

   i suggest you get a rifle that can change barrels such as a Sako Quad or Brno . . . i like the HMR and think you will like it but give yourself the option of going to the .22lr later if it doesnt...

   BRNO .22mag and heavy barrel for the Sako Quad would do an honest 1.0MOA at 100yrds. but the .17hmr would outshoot them and at longer range as well so they were sold off . . . i do like the .22mag...
