Not that i've ever been to Fiordland, but for me there would be an internal struggle if i were looking at one through the scope, not sure i would pull the trigger either.

I bought the Marshall, the zips are waterproof but when its really bad i put the pack liner cover on just to keep the pack dry

Go up the Otorehinaiti river & up to the biv, it's super easy to follow & plenty of deer in there
