    162gr Amax in a short barrled 7mm-08?

I've just started getting into reloading and I've been looking at projectiles for my tikka t3 7mm-08 that has a 17" barrel with a 1 in 9.5 twist rate.

In my air rifle I have found that heavy pellets have a lot more energy than standard ones and the ballistics are pretty similar with the heavy ones only dropping slightly lower.

So if the same applies to my 7mm-08 the 162gr Amax bullets should be much better for long range than the current 139gr interlocks I'm using.

I don't think I'd shoot at animals past 400m, most of my shots are 5-350m where I hunt.

I'm guessing the 162gr would go 2500 - 2600fps out of my rifle.

What are your thoughts on this? What powder would you suggest?

For those ranges is there any tangable advantage in running heavy for caliber projectiles over the more traditional middel weight for middle distances?

If you're not shooting past 400, I would look at sticking with medium weight projectile.

Nosler BT 120 and 140 are worth a look.

Obviously accuracy is better than both. Have to agree 140g fine, that's what I use in my 708. If speed is ya fancy you can dial for it if slow or fast, so again it comes down too accuracy

What about the 150 LRAB's? Anyone had much luck with them, should be able to fling them a little quicker and if you believe the numbers comparable bc to a 162 amax.

Quickload say rl 17 with 162s will end up around 2600 in an 18 inch barrel

I was looking at the same but have decided to just go 140nbt's

You would be better off with 150g Nosler Ballistic Tips, the reduced velocity will favour the BT for on game performance.

The 140 BT is a better choice again
