.22, how heavy for my twist

I have a 22-243win with a factory 1-14 twist, I have to make up a new load because my old load for the old gun is piss weak in this new one.

I have always used the 55g Ballistic tip at a mild 3700fps, and its nailed everything up to a few spikers.

Do I stick with them or load something like the 69g targex with a hefty load of powder to push them into stable flight.
If its guns, tits or tyres it's going to cost you lots of money

Twist rate is significantly more important for stability than speed

    You're probably stuck with ~55gr

Get a new barrel and run the 75gr A-Max.

    Hmmm disagree a little here.
Gryroscopical stabilisation will occur in xxx rpm range
    eg: 1:15 at 3000fps has same rpm as a 1:10 @ 2000

Yeah but getting another 1,000fps out of his .22-243 is unlikely.

My post was kinda badly worded. I meant it's more likely to make a bullet stable by changing the barrel to a faster twist than by cramming more powder into the same case.

The 14 twist is quite restrictive Gav.
I got some of the new 53grain Vmaxs because they have a high BC .290 IIRC but my 1-14 won't group better than 3/4-1 moa even at 41-4200 fps.
If I had a 1-12 or similar they would be great.
I tried to compensate for lack of twist with more speed ages ago & it didn't work.
As has been previously said when you increase the twist rate by even 1" it makes much more RPM than increasing the speed by heaps.
You need to run the numbers, my 1-7 really spins the 90 Bergers up at 31-3200+
I tried some 63s in one of my old 1-14 & it didn't shoot very well compared with the 50-52, but that shot 1/4-1/2 moa if I was behaving myself.

Hey, sorry to drag up an old thread, but was searching through and can't be arsed starting a new one.

Im looking at possibly getting a new tikka in 223. What twist barrel should I go for, the 1-9" or 1-12"?

Keeping in mind the rifle will be used for goats and the odd small fallow. So probably will be using 60gr projectiles.

Am I on the right track with projectile size? Or should I be looking at the 75 amax?

55gr TTSX will be the go. Ask Tahr on here, he has had a good run with them in his 223.
