It's not just a fad Micky. I probably have some confirmation bias being the owner of two fast twist 22cals, but the numbers are convincing: heavy high BC bullets help the 223 punch even more above its weight.

1:7 has basically been the default twist rate for 5.56 for decades. It means you can shoot practically anything. For militaries this was mainly for things like tracers and steel core. But the yanks also figured out that they could extend the useful range of their rifles with ammo like Mk262 which uses a 77gr SMK. It was adopted over 20 years ago.

Slow twist rates have hung around in the civilian market for the folks only interested in standard 55gr stuff and varminting.

You could also go old school, look at Speer 70gr soft point semi Spitzer, it was a solution to get heavier projectiles to stabilize back in the day when all .223s were 1 in 12 ish.
Its stubby and short and has a huge contact area with rifling which is apparently why it's able to stabilize.
I've used it on fallow deer and goats no problem.

Have anyone tried 1:9 barrel with 73 gr ELD match before? I just get my hands on Schmeisser SP15 and looking to reload some for target shooting.

    69 Targex are available. targex10.1@gmail.com

Also worth a try if you don't mind filling are 73 grn ELDM. They stabilise in my 1:9. They are quite short.

    Thank you!
I have several hundreds of 73gr ELD match projectiles left so will play with them first.
