It had a bit more to give speed wise, as there are no signs of pressure at all at that charge (for my rifle obviously) however, a deer won't know the difference if its going a bit faster or not. The advice I was given, is that if a 284 is set up correctly, it would be there or thereabouts with a rem mag, not use as much powder, and have a far better barrel life expectancy. I'm pretty happy with it.
It's a very efficient cartridge, and as you say if set up right so you can run the bullets seated out in the neck and not taking up powder capacity it can perform extremely well for the powder burnt compared to the larger cases. Great cartridge, if rifles chambered in it originally had been built to suit the longer COAL it surely would still be being chambered in factory rifles today.
