I know more than a few people that have got themselves a custom rifle they can't bear to part with now because it is essentially worthless to anyone else regardless of how much they spent on it. Also I am talking my a rifle for a pretty specific purpose...

Maybe I am one of those people that just want a TRG...

You might as well go full custom then you can pick stock barrel length mag setup etc etc they only become worthless if they are in some weird wildcat caliber trust me I know.... if I was building a rifle for elr shooting it'd be a 300 Norma mag hands down

    Custom rifle:
    Action - $1500 easy
    Barrel - $800
    Chassis - $1500 easy
    Trigger -
    Muzzle device -
    Gunsmithing -

And someone like ChrisF is selling his TRG for $4k and i have seen more than a couple sold for similar prices...

That's a fair point I suppose if it ticks all the boxes or most then good value for money

I looked into the Tikka options a while ago, it seems they like to do all their .300WM rifles with 1/11 twists, which I feel is too slow for some of these heavier projectiles, also Tikka actions have relatively short mags, better off with a Remington 700 with a floorplate, for example, as those heavy bullets are getting fairly long. I had some success with 230 grain Berger Hybrid OTM's over 2225, from memory velocity was pretty consistent but I moved up to .338LM before I could work out all the kinks. By the way, .338 could be a good option; you're only talking moving up from say 72 grains of powder to 90 (like 30c worth if that) projectiles aren't a hell of a lot dearer for the same brand/type and even if the cases cost an extra $2 each over the .300 that's only 20c worth per shot if you get 10 reloads per case (being bolt action you could). I did the math and it costs me about 80c-$1 more per shot to reload .338LM than when I had a .300WM.

My first long range rifle was a custom 300 win mag. It shot very well and I was happy with it except for the recoil and the amount of powder it burnt.
If I had to do it again and go the magnum way again I would take a 7 mag of some sort, preferably belt less, and if it had to be a .30 it would be a 300 wsm or similar, but again belt less and fater.

I am looking at building a long range steel/ PRS rifle in the near future. My options that I am looking at are 6.5CM or .300 WinMag and starting with a Howa action.

I am just wondering what your reasons are for a .300 over something like a 6.5 if you are only going to be shooting steel or paper? In my mind I was thinking a .300 if there was going to be an element of long range hunting but if energy at the target isn't a concern, something like a 6.5 with less recoil, noise/blast and barrel wear would be more ideal.

Just mainly wondering to put your thinking and reasons into my decision making process.

Already have a PRS style 260Rem. This rifle is for the matches that involve a significant proportion of target past about 800m... or past 1000m
