@Gille for those ranges just stick to the 190 Berger or smk. You can't go wrong with a trg in any Cal.
If you are going to push the 230 Berger then just jump to 338LM.
The funny thing with LR is you will eventually want to shoot further.

A little while ago someone in here and later on trade me had a 300NM for sale... Could it be a quick start???
Or build a 7mm/300(7mm projectile on a neck down 300wm case, Nathan Foster 7mm Practical) it will shoot the 180gr like a dream if the twist is right(1-8.5"). My opinion p
Want to shoot further - maybe... Have the location and suitable target to be able to shoot further... highly unlikely. And i would expect a long barreled 300WM using the heavy low drag projectiles will give the 338L a run for its money in the hands of a competent shooter / wind reader out to 1500m or so

I'll just put this here.....

I have a target you can borrow and we can meet somewhere to shoot those ranges and beyond. Tried to PM but can't find it on my phone. Can help with some brass for a fellow contributor too 😃
My shooting buddy has a long barreled 300WM with 230 Berger's and it can't compete with the 338LM.
The 300NM burns just as much powder as the 338LM.
Try both at those ranges then decide. End of the day it's usually economics that determine the win mag / lap mag debate.

It doesn't, there is a reason SOCOM picked this cal for the PSR.
What barrel length to get 2950 in a 300NM though?
The 300 WM is the one that can't compete, figures from Applied Ballistics and my reloading data:
338LM 250 Scenar at 2950 from a 26" tube: Litz G7 BC .308 Elevation to 1200m 11.6 Mils, 990 ft-lbs. 93-95 gr AR2217
338LM 300 Scenar at 2850 from a 26" tube: Litz G7 BC .393 Elevation to 1200m 10.7 Mils, 1640 ft-lbs. 92-93 gr AR2217
300 NM 230 Hybrid at 2950 from ?? bbl length: Litz G7 .368 Elevation to 1200m 10.3 Mils, 1255 ft-lbs. 80-83 gr AR2217
300 WM 230 Hybrid at 2660 from a 26" tube: Litz G7 .368 Elevation to 1200m 13.1 Mils, 944 ft-lbs. 72-73 gr AR2217

I've thought the 300 win mag was a lemon too, compared to bigger 7mm's or 338's
Thinking about putting a 30cal switch barrel with the 338cal barrel(TRG), 208gn A-Max at 3150fps I feel are even better than a 285gn at 2700fps, a truly devistating bullet(208).
Just a few things to consider with Sako TRGs in 300WM , usually the twist is 1-11 , this is not that good for the heavier 30 cal bullets , and its a legacy of the 308 barrels & 175gr smk s etc , so I would 1st check what the twist rate is for the Sako TRG-42 , and see if you are happy with that , I look at the 300WM wanting a 1-10 or tighter normally .
In reguards to the newer Sako TRG M10 , I donot know what twist that rifle is in the 300WM chambering , however I just looked at the Sako 2016 online catalog & find only the 308 & 338LM as listed calibres for the M10 , and no mention of the 300WM .
Yeah the 1:11" twist on the TRGs isn't ideal for the 300WinMag but short of a custom rifle i am unlikely to find everything i want in one rifle. The SSG08 in 300WingMag has a 1:10" twist barrel but it is only a 24" barrel!
The M10s are awesome! And well and truly out of my price range! At this stage i am thinking a second hand TRG42 would be good. And if at some stage down the track i happen to re-barrel it then ok!
That 300 Norma Magnum looks the business!
