6.5x55 SE does the job for me. Reloading your own ammo is a must for this calibre if you want to get the most out of it. As previously mentioned the factory ammo is a little slow due to having to accommodate the older rifles.
I don't understand the hype around the 6.5 Creedmore in a bolt action rifle. Totally get the advantage in a gas gun however.
Ackley Improved is an advantage not just for improved case capacity, but also for effectively removing the need to ever trim case length again. (1 less step in the whole reloading process is totally worth it)

Given the choice of starting over with a 6.5, I'd be squarely looking at a 260AI.

I have a Rem M7 with 18.5 inch barrel that is chambered in 260Imp (30d) that is shooting 140VLD's at a little under 2700fps. Happy as a pig in mud!

Any of the options listed here are good enough for what you want, and will all do well and shoot further than you need. Pick up a few and see how they feel, don't worry about what chambering it's in, none of them are significantly better than any other (unless you got to something like a 264 WinMag).

If reloading and don't like trimming cases, (A)Imp or CRM are good options.

Thanks for all the input fellas, I think I will go for a plain 260, I have one lined up, a model 7 Rem.
Is it much drama to have it altered to AI? or just a reamer pass and a set back.

Just bought a 6.5x55 with a 22 inch barrel, in the throes of getting reloading gear together. Does anyone bother to AI them or no real gain in a short barrel ?

In the latest ROD & Rifle it was determined that the ultimate NZ hunting rifle is a 6.5 Creedmoor

Throw enough money at marketing anything, and it will come out on top. 6.5CM, US presidency etc.

And next year the ultimate nz cartridge will be the 7 mm water-blaster :-)
Out of all the rifles I got through my hands in the last two years ( 2500+), 308 and 7-08 come way above at the top of the list, next 270 and 223 then 243, 7rem mag and 300 win mag, next 6x5x55 .

Despite the huge number of 303 I worked on less than a dozen, and I might have worked on 3 to 5 6.5 creedmoor rifles in total.

So yes it is just the promotion of a magazine to increase the sales of the 6.5 CM.
