or a suppressor..... the big plus to .308 is the ease of finding components and that wont change in a hurry.

Its an interesting call because the 6.5 is more than adequate for most of my shots and I'm recoil/muzzle blast sensitive (and I like to shoot my hunting rifle a lot).
I just can't imagine why someone who wants to shoot 600 plus yards would choose a 308 over the 284 (or even a 6.5). You have to have such a big projectile to match the bc and then you really want a wsm etc, I'd love one but then recoil is going north without a muzzle break.
    ....you're still overthinking it.

    No he's not.

Maybe for you this is too involved, but a lot of us think like this and enjoy a reasoned and logical analysis and discussion. It adds to the enjoyment of our recreation whilst we can't be out there doing it as work is getting in the way.

...maybe I should've added: "in my humble opinion"
...the deer don't know the difference...."in my humble opinion"
...you can dial any difference..."in my humble opinion"

    Lighten up dude.

    No lightening up required.

This is a discussion forum. We discuss ideas of interest. It's fun and sometimes informative. If the discussion doesn't interest you then feel free to pass by and leave it be.

Alternatively you could elaborate on why he's overthinking it with some reasoned comment. That would be most welcome

Point taken - and in response, guess I'll just head down to the local store, buy some readily available 308 ammo, maybe some projectiles and load up a range of weights for a really non-fussy calibre - while not getting too hung up on velocity or SD or pressure; and still be able to dial if required....head off to the range to test, and then go hunting.
The above sentence is all the reasoning I need; your mileage may vary.
I do enjoy reading threads like this, they always pop up and no one will ever agree with everything that comes out.

Good stuff, last few days a mate shot a decent sized Sika hind at 700 with the 6.4prc/147eldm and smoked it with an impressive exit wound. Tuesday, I watched another mate with a 6.5x55 put a 143eldx thru the shoulders of a big Sika stag at 250 and smash that. I like my 284 but that PRC is super impressive, the slippery bullet, high velocity and moderate recoil, unbelievably effective.

If I wasn't scared of my wife I would be bloody close to making the switch because the PRC was so emphatic and humane in a scenario where the others would struggle a little. A 308 would struggle even more so the shot wouldn't be on for me and that's not the end of the world either.

6.5 at 2000fps plus seems to be the key, it seems below that the slower killing comes into play.

I see your point Fisherman...but for me as its ALWAYS going to be under 350.... yeah the options to do it ethically and cleanly are much easier.

What sort of rifle setup and load do you have in the 284 @Fisherman?

Well, just received "Bronco's" specials for the week, every rifle is in 6.5 cal, doesn't that tell something.

162eldm out of a tikka at 2770fps, truth is it probably has more killing power than the prc.

That would certainly do the business! Is the 284 similar weight to the 6.5*55 or lighter/heavier?
