Probably going to go for a 16.5inch proof in 30cal, and run a 300saum as per Kelton advice. After playing with grt, I should get a 155g vld berger moving at around 2888fps with rl17 and a 16.5inch proof barrel, an 18inch for 30cal wild get it going roughly 2925. So not much gain for 1.5inch less length through the bush. I also prefer defiance actions. They feel great, and I wanted a short action, because I have a short action carbon stock sitting here with bottom metal and magazine to fit. And I already have 2x long action defiance.

Its a Niko Stirling 4-16 FFP Mrad. They are amazing for the money, but obviously scopes that are twice the price are going to be better. I have 3 of them now on various rifles and have been using them for 3 or 4 years with zero issues. They all track properly and do what they should. The only real downside to them is the weight (30mm tube = around 620g) FOV @ 16 power is not the greatest, but I prefer 44mm bells to 50mm.

It wasn't my first choice for this rifle, I just happened to have it in the drawer. I have not decided on the final scope for this rifle. Maybe a Vx3 4.5-14 CDS, but I would prefer something 4-18 or 3-21 that is 600g or less. The Vx3 is nice because its so light.

Just as a hint, I think nz Asia have a few kimber mountain ascent in 280ai.

And this morning I saw a Remington 7 in 7 saum, factory stainless fluted in a nice wooden stock at shooter ready in Cambridge.

Also, if buying a defiance , unless you go with their Anti action, why not going straight with their Remington 7 footprint instead of the Remington 700 sa footprint. That would make sense if your are not going to have any extended magazine.

    If I were doing a short action 7mm it'd be a 7mm-6.5PRC.
Hornady and Lapua brass being the main reasons, just size up neck with a mandrel and away you go.

I have a short Saum wildcat described in page 4 in here wildcat appreciation thread.

It's a fair bit of work to get underway, and you need good quality soft brass. I agree with previous posters that if you have a short action where you can seat out to he lands from mag-loaded rounds then sticking with the Saum would be the go. Something like a rem 700 short action with a wyatt mag box might do it.

I'm going to build a second saum as I love caliber. I'm thinking it needs to be different to my standard long range dial up saum so might run monos with a small bdc style scope.
Probably hammer hunter 143s and Barnes lrx 145 that I have on the shelf

No offence, but what does that do that a.284 Win can't?

    Isn't a .284 not a short action?
