Id keep it somewhat simple with 7mm SAUM at 18" (or more). I wouldn't bother going shorter then that, there's just no need as 18" is plenty short enough. Even my 20" SAUM is a very short handy rifle once its combined with the short action just like Keltons above (but not quite as cool).
Probably going to go for a 16.5inch proof in 30cal, and run a 300saum as per Kelton advice. After playing with grt, I should get a 155g vld berger moving at around 2888fps with rl17 and a 16.5inch proof barrel, an 18inch for 30cal wild get it going roughly 2925. So not much gain for 1.5inch less length through the bush. I also prefer defiance actions. They feel great, and I wanted a short action, because I have a short action carbon stock sitting here with bottom metal and magazine to fit. And I already have 2x long action defiance.
never tried one in the higher power range but the older japanese made nikko stirling gold crown 3x9x40 had an amazing field of view..better than many lower powered and fixed power scopes
75/15/10 black powder matters
Just as a hint, I think nz Asia have a few kimber mountain ascent in 280ai.
And this morning I saw a Remington 7 in 7 saum, factory stainless fluted in a nice wooden stock at shooter ready in Cambridge.
Also, if buying a defiance , unless you go with their Anti action, why not going straight with their Remington 7 footprint instead of the Remington 700 sa footprint. That would make sense if your are not going to have any extended magazine.
If I were doing a short action 7mm it'd be a 7mm-6.5PRC.
Hornady and Lapua brass being the main reasons, just size up neck with a mandrel and away you go.
All the short magnum 7mms are better suited for use in a short action due to the shorter case length.
In a long action they are good for an additional 150-200fps.
The 284win is a very good catridge, very efficient for the powder it burns but it doesn't keep up with the magnums (which burn 10gr more powder per shot).
