    7mm08 vs 284win

I’ve always been curious to try a 284win and I’m wondering if the forum can shed some tangible light on whether the cost and expense is worth it over my 7mm08… I like a handy rifle and want to keep max barrel length to 20”.

My 7mm08 pushes a 162gr ELD-M at 2630fps (very accurately!). From my internet reading a 20” 284win is likely to run up to ~2800fps if I’m lucky?

Running the ballistics calcs the 7mm08 still is at 2019Fps and 1466Ft-Lb at 500yrds and at a MV of 2800fps (284win) is holding 2166fps/1687Ft-lb at 500yrds.

    So, a + 146fps /221 Ft-lb advantage to the 284win…. Doesn’t seem much!

And in terms of wind deflection, 1.75’’ advantage to the 284win in a 20kph crosswind at 500yrds!

So, my question is for an all-round hunting rifle out to 500yards is there any a tangible difference? Am I missing something? I like the “point of difference” of the 284win but the practicality of components for the vanilla 7mm08 make it attractive! Please educate me!

Foot pounds of energy kills nothing. Velocity and pill construction however.....

Important to decide if all the animals you shoot are so far away that you need the extra velocity - if that is the case, get a 7mm Mag instead. Leave the suppressor off and enjoy the velocity of a proper length barrel. (without being any longer than your 20" with a can hanging off it)

    - If, however, you are like most of us and shoot your deer inside 300yds, your 7mm08 is just what you need! Save the money for pills and powder.

In conclusion. I'm sayin "don't do it"!

284 every time. 22in bbl pushes 162 AMAX at 2930 fps

    I've got 2 x 284 wins, a 17" and a 22".

However.........I'm going to be sensible and say, for shooting deer to 500 yards max, just stay with what you have. A 162 eldm at 2630 fps is arriving at 500 yards just a tad under 2,000 fps. That bullet will perform fine at that terminal velocity.

Unless of course you want to go thru the exercise of re-chambering your barrel and buying new dies and new brass and likely new powder too, which is not that easy in today's environment.

I've done this exercise many times in my App and also compared it to my 6.5 Creedmoor, I've come to the conclusion that unless i can push a 162 weight pill at 2950 -3000fps I'm gaining nothing over my 143 6.5 doing 2816 fps
So better to stick with your 7-08 or go SAUM

Any reloading 7mm08 AK improved, got a barrrel and dies but waiting for 7mm projectiles to reasonably priced. Believe the 162 eldm shoot well, what sort of speeds? Heard some rediculous figures, but the reloading programs and books say way less.

people have been shooting animals out to that range for over a century with the 7x57 which for all intents and purposes is the same as the 7mm/08 .... if you are happy with how your 7mm/08 is working for you...your load is killing well and is accurate....DONT FCUK AROUND WITH IT...... leave the plurry thing alone and just enjoy it as it is for what it is...Im a .270 man myself but my nephew went 11 deer from 11 shots with his 7mm/08 before cocking one up...I cannot argue with that effectiveness...poke that pill in the right spot and the animal wont care which case is pushing it.

Don't waste your time. All the extra aggravation isn't worth it. If you wanting to shoot further probably best of buying a fancy scope and a kestrel for wind calling. That combo will still knock most things over @ 700yds (1844fps & 1224ft lbs)

I've had both and as above would recommend spending funds on what you have on glass or components a rechamber all adds up. A bigger caliber doesn't make you a better hunter/shooter. I wish I had of realized this a few years ago...

    20" barrel, 180 eld doing 2675 mv. Arrives at 500yd doing 2132 with 1817ft/lbs. So an extra 100ft/s and 400ft/lbs (nearly 30% more energy) over your 7mm08 w/ 162's.

Also had 160's doing 2850 using Re26 but it was very temp sensitive so backed off to 2750 using ADI powder.

Later dropped from 160's to more stout 150's at a mild-ish 2815 (could push for 2900) as a close range load. With 180's for longer stuff.

If you have a 7mm08 then yeah it's only a marginal upgrade. I didn't though so as a new build it was exactly what I wanted.. wish I'd gone 24-26" unsuppressed in hindsight though.

I personally don't think it's worth it, the small gains aren't worth it. For the same if not less effort (more available components, maybe) you could build a 7mm mag of some type and send the 180gr class projectiles at similar speeds. Then the gains are more substantial and the cost/work in setting up the new rifle more justified in my opinion anyway.

Having said that a 7-08 with a good scope and well practiced operator will best a budget setup 7mm mag that hasn't been shot cause the build and/or ammo is to expensive.

I was thinking about this...and guess its a bit like the .223 vs 22-250 thing......if only shooting out to 150 yards, both will do the job well...untill you start pissing around with faster twist rates and/or heavier projectiles there isnt a huge difference in it...yes for sure there is some and the 22-250 with varmit pills is spectacular at blowing up rabbits n hares...but loaded with varmit pills the 223 is no slouch either.
going back to 7mm-08 Vs 284.......the difference is 100yards give or take eg hit with 7mm/08 at 400 will be near enough to same with 284 at 500

The real differancd will be at the range.
You will have the only 284. All the other 7mm's will be the lessor 7m08 or the overkill 7mm rem mag.

Hodgson reloading data excluding Staball6.5 as its only listed for the 7m08
    7RM will run 175gr @ 2900, 168gr berger @3000, soft and hence faster
    284 will run 175gr @ >2700, 168gr serria @ 2830,
    7m08 Wii run 175gr @ 2650, 168gr serria @ 2670.
Nb the staball 6.5 looks like it will give you another 100fps.
