85gn plus 224 hunting projectile performance

    Hello folks

Ive got an 18" 1:7 twist barrel. It was supposed to be headed to a 223 but I'm having second thoughts.

My modelling shows a 22 Creedmoor will get 3050-3100 with 85/88s at the muzzle, with about 2200 fps and 1000fpe left at 500M. Hard not to like that.

But how about projectile performance at those velocity ranges - anybody got experiences with these "super heavies) on deer, tahr etc?

I have a 1:7 26 inch barrel using 75 Amax at around 3100. I tried 80s when they first came out but settled on the 75s for the little bit more velocity. It’s my fallow gun and the longest shot so far is about 300 metres through the lungs because I’m a meat hunter. It wasn’t a bang flop but only ran twenty metres

I know you are talking 85 plus grains but my experience is that the Targex 80 grn is a harder bullet than the 80 grn ELDM, but still kills well. I would imagine (but don't know) that they would hold up well at Creedmoor velocities.

I've shot a heap of roos with the 88gr ELD-M's from my 223ai now. Generally happy with them. Though I have had some slow kills. And some bullets not exit from high chest shots (so less than 6" of animal). I'd probably give them a poke on deer from that rifle well inside 300 but might aim for the head or the crease.

Bowled a few fallow with them from the 22-250ai (before giving them a go in the 223ai). Very convincing at those speeds.

There's an 80 ELDX which may be a little tougher than the ELDM at those speeds up close

I have some but have yet to get time to load and shoot any animals

Have got a mate that runs the 88's at 3200 (really hot, do not copy) in his 22 creed thermal gun and its like the hammer of thor and shoots super flat. really drops reds and pigs on the spot

I would hesitate to shoulder shoot with those when up close though. the new 80 eld-x would be worth a try as Gimp says

I’m using 80gr hammer HHTs in my 22 creed cruising along at 3200 fps. Super accurate and accounted for 3 fallow all between 250-300y
Only issue is the price of them
