Thread: Advice on DOA 600 reticle.

I have a guided hunt in Whanganui coming up. I have a 243 with factory Winchester ammo. And a bushnell elite 4500.

I have not had the opportunity to go to the Clevedon range to verify where the dots line up with what range.

Due to the caliber I won't be shooting further than 300 M.

Would I be better off adjusting for elevation? I have used the bushnell ballistic app and seen where they go but I would like to verify it.

try and buy a few boxes of the same ammo so it is the same batch to get a consistent shot placement as it is made in batches in the factory and can vary from batch to batch which will just add more confusion and stress too what you are trying to achieve.As MSL said MAKE the time and practice as much as you can good luck

I have the DOA 600 reticle. Haven't confirmed it in the field yet (well, beyond 200m anyway). The Bushnell website has a list of ammo that is supposed to be compatible. I also plugged all my details into Strelok and bullet drop was reassuringly similar (give or take 10-20m at the distant 100m increments)

unsure on the bushnell but the zeiss recticle i have doesnt work well, have to use a set magnification and even then it doesnt make it to nice round numbers from memory the 400 yard mark is closer to 500. dialling seems to be the way to go if you have time and shooting far enough.

as has been said go and shoot to to confirm and then figure out the drop in your head and work out where to put the cross hairs on the animal depending on drop

Yeah I will check it on the range when it is open. Seems fairly close.

This scope adjusts point of aim not point of impact. Very very confusing at first. To adjust the point of impact up you need to adjust point of aim down.

I am only shooting to 300 M with a 243 so put to 200 it'll drop 1.4 inches.

300 it's around 6 inches. So would have to either aim for top of spine or use the third dot

It's just basically a holdover tool, that's how I view it anyway

Gidday - I shoot at 300M on the range 4 or so times a year, greater distances (max 600 yards) less often. We also host a "Deerstalkers shoot" once a year and the results of their 300M shooting at a deer target are not very encouraging with only a wee few exceptions. I can tell you that 300M with a hunting weight rifle and not much practise is a very long shot indeed based on my own hunting experience. Your guided hunt might have fairly conrolled conditions but shooting in the field is always a lot more variable than on a range. Thats the bad news.

The good news is if you can get to the range and check the zero of your rifle with 3 shot groups (centered 50 to 70mm high at 100M, don't get hung up on group size unless its well over 50mm) you'll be well equipped to shoot to just over 300M. Your guide will give you the range, and unless it approaching the plus 250M mark, aim dead on. If its close to 300M aim for the top of the back, no higher. I have seen hundreds of rounds go over the top of deer/Tahr at under 300 yards (and done it myself).

Cheers for the advice. A trip to the range is definitely planned.

I have only done bang on at 100 last weekend. I considered getting a 3 inch high at 100 zero. Definitely useful for Hunting scenario. Range and then just shoot for the middle.

That will cover you for hunting.

It will be spot on @ 50 & 200, slightly high @ 100 and slightly low @ 300

Second that mate.

I just zero my 308 to do just that.

270 -320 just aim a touch higher in the shoulder.

Seems to work rather well for simplicity.

Check for the 600 DOA manual, certain calibers can't be used on your horizontal lines so you will have to dial up, if you use the bushnell app and want to take a change you'll find that once your ammo is loaded one of your power magnification gives you damm close distance for 200,300,400 & 500 m for each horizontal line, mine is 9x and 12x for the super hornady and federals

Yep 243, set it for a 200mtr zero.
Max 2" high at 125 and 6" low at 300mtr give or take couple of inches which will nail any fallow deer you come across.
assuming you are targeting fallow deer so pick something in the 80-90gr bullet range.
Look for sierra 85gr game king, Horndey 87gr HPBT, 90gr eldx
Given that they will be hard to find a bog standard federal blue with 80gr SP would be fine.
