    Another what load thread 243

Trying some different loads in this mohawk 243. It seems to like the lighter pills. I've got hold of some 75gn speers to try. I looked at the hodgen site and I have Imr 4064 cfe 223 and varget. What have you found that works out of those powders I have some others but they arent listed so probably not suitable.

    Is one of your other powders AR2209 ( H4350 ) ?
My Hornady manual lists it for 75gn bullets.
What are the other powders you have ?
I haven't tried any bullets as light as 75gns in my rifles.

Hornady lists H4895 ( AR2206H ) for 75gn bullets so probably worth a try. I know with this powder pressure can come on suddenly so work up carefully and check for pressure signs at every stage.
Let me know if you want a copy of the page from Hornady's book.

90gr Nosler Bt @3250 from 21" barrel goes good, also load 85gr Barnes to the same speed and have shot 75gr Hornady using it also

Is that the speer 75gr varmint with the big hollow point?

I got caught out with some old ones a few years back. Had some leftovers I inherited and wanted to use up, but not enough to justify using 10 for working up a load.. Figured I'm cool got a strong modern bolt action. So I just went to a load say 1-2gr under book max after looking at 2 or 3 sources.

Well that was a mistake as I had a stiff bolt lift on the second shoot. some time later I was talking with my Dad and he laughed and said he had had the same experience with them.

Moral of the story, start at book minium and work up.
There must be something in the shape and construction of them, long bearing surface and maybe a thicker jacket to control that Hugh hollow point.

Try some 2213sc. Used this with 75gr Hornady in a Sako 75. It was brutally accurate for goats but not a rifle to carry daily.

Imr4064 may surprise you. I am using it in 243 with 95 grain BTs.

Just about to head out for the test, loaded 5 each of cfe 4064 and varget all with 75gn speer hp varmint. If it doesn't shoot any good with these I guess it will be look at a new barrel time....been trying loads from 100gn down and it does get slightly better the lighter I go, but still not to my liking

    Greetings @blip,
Good point about a new barrel. Those Mohawks are getting a bit long in the tooth for a barrel burner like the .243. On the powders you first mentioned all should be fine with IMR4064 perhaps the best, you don't need a slow powder with those light pills to get top velocities. If original your barrel should be a 1 in 9 inch twist so should handle the heavy pills as well but not the new super pointy ones. I try to keep the powders I use to a minimum. AR2206H for the .308, .303 and .30-40 including reduced loads. I used to use it in the .223 but am moving to BM8208 that is closer to the now gone AR2206 and fits in the case better. The 6.5 Swede gets AR2209 which will be no surprise to you. The 7mm SAUM uses AR2217 but will probably change to AR2213SC when the current can runs out.
Recently I had to load some 7mm-08 for a rifle lent to me by my son for F Class shooting. I loaded 145 grain Speer projectiles over AR2206H (both what I had). You don't have to find the ideal powder for every cartridge and projectile and for the more standard ones what you have will work just fine.
    Regards Grandpamac.
