Loaded up 40 rounds of ammo with the 51.5gr load today at bambislammers place as I am happy with that load. Found a formula for working out velocity (better than guessing it) to get an actual idea of what it may be doing without a chrony (hence making up the 40 rounds so I can get a chrony reading at some stage) so 51.5gr/54.3gr (max load) x 3012 (velocity of listed max load) = you velocity (mine was 2856FPS) so I ran it through the hornady calculator and was happy with the results

Good shooting and a good start at reloading hunter308. I'm not sure what gimps comment of "glacial" was meant to mean either, so I'm on the thick list too
Not that I advise this generally and you have found a charge weight you are happy with and velocities is not the be all and end all, but your velocity is terrible from a 130gr pill out of a .270 with a 24" barrel. Have you thought about pushing the envelope a bit more? Maybe you'll find another good node and better velocities? I use 54gr of 2209 with 150gr pills out of a 22" barrel and it's actually a mild load. If your happy, then sweet, but just my 2cents.

Nice one, @Grunta. Speeds not everything, for sure.

I only speed test the final load once I've finished testing and settled on a charge weight, etc ..

I have found that pushing the envelope inevitably pays. All my go to accurate loads are up near max .

Just do it with caution and stay safe, ay ?

when I was working up to 54 grains the groups started to open up again maybe I should have gone with something like 2213sc like I was going to do but ended up following the trend and going for 2209 but one thing I was taught when I first began reloading back in 2009 and have stuck by it was to load for accuracy not speed i need to chrony these rounds to find the true velocity and not calculator velocity as that is only an approximate to give you something to work with. once I get my own press and not rushed for time I will do another load development to try and get more speed as well as accuracy but this one was just to find a load good enough for some hunting just to keep me going till I can get some of my own gear.

Why do you feel the need to chrony, if accuracy was your aim?

Those flip up scope covers you have, how quiet are they too 'flip' and how much extra precautions do you need to take when stalking in the bush [so you don't rip them off or have them fall shut again]?
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

Just a curiosity thing spook always nice to know the actual velocity of your ammo, as for the flip up scope covers they are very quiet when they flip up the are spring loaded so not much chance of them slapping shut. mainly got them on there to keep crap off my lenses while in the gun cupboard.

Finally found a better load for the sierra gameking bullets I did some more testing while at muckos place I wanted to try out 55-56 grains of 2209 with 56 grains being max charge in the speer manual did not get any acceptable accuracy but did get some chrony readings my initial 53.5 grain load for the sierras got me 1" at 100 meters unfortunately the batteries on the chrony got a bit low and did not take the velocities of the 53.5 grain load which I was a bit dissapointed but at least this will be a slightly harder hitting round than my original load with the hornady bullets so for the accuracy I am getting at 1" at 100 meters I might leave it there and call that the load my rifle likes for this bullet combo.

    The brew
    RP brass
    federal210/CCI200 primer
    53.5grains of 2209
    130 grain Sierra Gameking
    cartridge overall length 3.260"
    24 inch barrel

The loads that did get recorded are below
56 grains (max load in speer manual) = 3050 fps
    55.5 grains = 2974 fps
    55.0 grains = 2950 fps

I use 2213 in mine and although I have used it at a range it has always been accurate without any fuss at all...And always over 3050fps. I see your handy, can I offer you some powder, some projectiles ( if needed). I used Sierra GK as well and they go well.
Recently I am loading some 140s Bergers and some 130 Gmx.
If you are looking into keeping what you've got and you like the caliber maybe you could sort out that flyer talk. That could be a deal breaker? Possibly.

I'm no expert but I rate the accuracy of my 270. It's a very good killer as well.
Get in touch if you want to have a play around with the loads.

The flyer thing has gone since I adjusted the trigger to make it a bit lighter and also corrected my finger positioning on the trigger all i can think of was my shit finger positioning on the trigger and the weight the trigger was at out of the box was resulting in me pulling my shots. I could go to 2213sc if I wanted to but i have a full bottle of 2209 in the cupboard and happy to use that till it is gone then I will look at getting a bottle of 2213sc and doing further load development my two accuracy loads may not be a 3000fps load but it will still drop a deer, pig or goat out to 300 meters (not that I get to shoot that far except when bashing gongs). I like my rifle and I don't mind the caliber not in any rush to get rid of it.

Yeah no worries mate I guess I spent too much time and money on chasing that hunting round with target precision when I first started reloading but the time I took out from reloading made me realize that all I needed was a load with good hunting accuracy of 1 inch at 100 meters out of a standard hunting rifle I could do better if I got some work done to the rifle like bedding, free floating etc but right now I have a rifle and ammo that will keep me going till one day I can afford to get a bedding job done and maybe have the action trued up but that will not be for quite a while yet.
