With 150 SST's I use 45.5g of 2206H in my Sako 85 18" barrel. Haven't put it over the chronograph but same load in the same rifle when the barrel was 20" gave me 2830 fps. Should be doing around 2780 fps. Lapua cases, Fed 210M primers. No sign of excess pressure.

I used 45g 2206h but found it destroyed the front shoulder on Sika at bush ranges, complete jelly kind of stuff so use them for longer range shots now.bloody accurate tho.

Know it is not just about speed and am happy with my load for bush hunting but would be nice to crank something down the barrel that will give me a bit more oomph at range.
why do you need or want more oomph if your using it at a range ?
more oomph for animal yeah, but paper an steel?

"At range" not "at a range"
Meaning I want the bullet to hold more energy at longer ranges

I found the answer mate. I had the same problem. Just sold the gun and got a 300 win mag.

You want more speed then 2206h or win 748 may be better powders. I don't think stoking up using slower powders is the way to best utilise short barrels

So load accurate but now my concern is variation in speed as last night fired 3 shots and the chrony read in order 2624fps, 2482 fps & 2534 fps. At an average of about 2550fps i am happy with speed as i was guessing about that from mates who run the same combo or have in the past. Is this an issue that there is such a difference?
Also ran my 125s through and they were a hair under 3000fps with 49grs of 2206h and fed magnum primers but mate said not to run magnum primers in non magnum calibres but there was no pressure signs and only a 7fps variance in the load.

so 140ish fps difference...run the numbers at the maximum range you are intending to shoot and see difference in impacts...THAT and only that will answer your question...personally it wouldnt worry me in the slightest if the load was accurate at hundy...dont own or have a use for a chronicgraph....

your 125 load sounds like a keeper...tell mate to butt out,or tell him you have changed,or tell him nothing. or supply you with free std primers, your load is working fine, the magnum primer is obviously working fine

Maybe a scope with slightly more mag would help...running a 2.5-8 haha
Get a dial up scope with a higher mag and you'll be away. My 16" barrel does 600 yards easy enough.
