brilliant stuff.....now if you make the hole a bit deeper.....and can speed up the load.....look out animals LOL.
had another good read up of N.F knowledgebase on the 44 magnum last night and the increased velocity thing pops up again...its there in the .45/70 blurb too.... just a little more speed can it seems make quite a big difference .....

Yes 10mm deep would be good
But the M6 ball end mill isn't the ideal cutter for the job
    I will look for alternatives

you garden variety drill bits work fine...if I can do it with cordless drill, and not fluff it up too much, you will be far better than I by using your set up....if you used your sharpening skills...of just chucked bit over the bench grinder and made the cutty/pointy part of bit longer/shallower angle, you could have a good deep hollow point with progressively more meat left on the outside to slow the mushrooming......

10mm deep with a normal drill bit and it's down to 355 grains and it gets me into some faster powder options also

Well I actually found that in the lathe at a decent speed the drill bit was pretty well self centering and they came out very nicely

Now I need to test expansion into damp sawdust and recover them to see if its even worth the effort

    405 grain solid
    385 6x6mm hollow
    355 6x10mm hollow

I have a mountain of wet sawdust so that will be my best option for fast results

I do have a bullet baffle box but it was built and used to test sub sonic bullet expansion with 240 grain 44 bullets and I think the 45-70 super sonic would blow it to pieces

chuck a couple of filled water bottles in front of it,to slow things down a tad....as long as its the same for each all will be equal.

Found this one just sitting on the clay (the miracle find)
That coating is tough eh. Even the rifling didn't remove it

Well a mountain of wet sawdust is a pretty brutal test medium

The 403 grain flat point opened just a little and still weighs 397 grains

And the m6x10mm hollow point one went from 355 grains to 250 grains
The shank did expand nicely but the nose is completely gone

So I'm not thinking there's any particular benefit from mortifying the basic bullets

But it's fun to experiment with

I would say the modification of 2nd one was just about perfect, because you have managed to transpher some of the energy...it has to go somewhere....it must have slowed down somewhat quicker than the other..... now to find a real test of them..wallabies are good LOL.....
