Thread: loading for shorter 308 barrels.

I have always loaded my 308 with 2208, not for any particular reason it's just what I was recommend when the rifle had a longer tube.
It now has a 19" tube, any suggestions on a powder that will get a bit more velocity out of it.
Pill size I usually use is 150gr but if I'm going to develop a new load I'm interested in hearing suggestions,
Also I have a pound off CFE223 that I was thinking might be a way to go,

2206h may be the go. Im in the same spot with a 17" barrel and was recommended this

Getting 3000fps with 130s out of 16inch Rossi with 2208, massive muzzle flash without can on tho. H335 would be better with 130s.

That is the only load I have done for it other than a 90gr sub load.

3000fps is pretty impressive out of a 16",

2206h, is that with a heavy pill or something lighter like namcam's featherweights?

I have found 2208 and W748 to be really good 308 powders, but lose velocity in shorter barrels compared to 2206H and H335.
2206H for the heavier projectiles (165/180) or H335 for the lighter projectiles (110/130) are about the best for a short 308, have to be careful with using H335 to get max velocity loads though, when you get close, it ramps up fast, assuming your rifle likes them, I would suggest the 110/130 TTSX as useful light projectiles out to 250 yds or so, and the 165 SST/168 Amax as useful heavy projectiles out to 600 or so (if you read the wind and range accurately) . The heavy projectile has the advantage of also being outstanding at close range on heavy or light framed animals, the tougher light projectiles get marginal at distance. My two cents worth!

Cheers, I might give the 2206h a try with those heavier 168gr amax. Or something similar depending what's in stock when I shop,
