Never had this happen before.... Help

Was working out coal/seating depth for the new rifle (270WSM)
And when trying to seat the projectile in an empty un primed case I felt resistance but hadn't had the seating rod hit the bottom of the die yet ? So I gave it a few more newton's and this happened. Anyone able to shed some light ?
Set the die in the press (Lee breechlok) screwed it down till it just touched the shell holder at full extention as I normally would and the case was crushed when trying to seat the projectile.
As mentioned I felt resistance before getting full extention and the die was not yet touching the case holder.
Sorry if this is a noob mistake

Had the same happen several times when using collet neck sizing dies. I think either not aligned properly, or collet stuck in closed position

Screw the die out.back the seated stem off, fresh case all the way up,screw the die down to shoulder, back off, then adjust the seating stem for col.
Works for me but I'm just an old cnut so what would I know.
Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out

Seating/crimp die combo adjustment out? crimping before reached seating depth? Had that happen with .44 and buckled case but not sure how possible it is with rifle loading.

Someone annealed the neck, the shoulders and down the sides of the shoulders methinks. Looks great. Ask if you can get away with only neck annealing.

You don't normally have seating die hard down on shell holder.
Just have a case in shell holder raise ram with case up fully then wind die down until it just touches the case then back off about 1/2 a turn and lock ring then good to go.

thanks guys appreciate all the input,
I'm running a full length sizing/decapping die and a seating die (Lee).
I will reset the seating die with a empty case and wind the seating depth right out and do it that way.
that case will be one for the shelf of stoopid mistakes

Did exact same thing the other day on a nicely neck turn 284. Got to remember to back off that seating die.

    Arrrrr, yes.... middle age spread.

I think a better diet is recommended along with more exercise.

The cartridge on the left looks like a candidate for a head separation. Is the brass old?

that's why it was being used as a dummy round to check seating depth COAL etc the one on the right has the beginning of a split forming in the neck on the side facing away from the camera.
it's about all these 2 cases where good for.
just wanted a dummy to make sure they would mag feed, eject unfired round and and good for setting up dies to the right height.

@dannyb now what you have here is a cartridge that is rearing to go. You see the donut at the top is not really a donut at all but a spring so that the mighty 270 can get a good old run up before it enters the barrel

ps go with the other guys advice ah
