I shoot a 6" barrelled pistol CCI standard still does 975fps, in my 20" rifle it does 1050-1075fps so going short doesn't slow down much supersonic loads would not
slow down to sub velocity in a 6" barrel and you would have an illegal file arm most likely

.22 supersonic reaches full velocity in about 16" of barrel, and becomes measurably slower after about 24". I would think 9-10" would give subsonic velocity with hi-speed ammo. At that length you would be in possession of a pistol (ie; less than 762mm overall length). Stick with 16" and use subsonic! If you wish to shoot bigger bodied animals like hares, etc, then you will get much better penetration with target ammo with the RN lead solid. The Winchester subsonic HP bullet expands very quickly and will create nasty wounds on hares but not give clean kills due to insufficient penetration.

Thanks for that @gundoc (and all others). .22 will be for close range rabbits etc. I have a 17HMR (or .223 rem) if anything bigger or father away needs dealing to. Sounds like 16", subsonic and a big fat suppressor is the way to go.

Keep an eye out for Aquila SSS sub sonic. Rather than drop to loading they upped the size of the projectile to 60gr. Especially if you want to carry a bit more energy into your target. can be hard to get though...

Funny looking things, sort of a 22 short case with a huge long bullet. None of my 22s would stableise them, shot side on holes all over the target at 10 metres. But they were super quiet without a silencer sort of a pop. I guess a fast twist is needed to have them work.

I know this would vary depending on the ammo used but has anyone tried it or know anything about it?
Not only the barrel will be so short that it becomes a pistol, but also that it would very loud.

they cycle in my browning buckmark rifle just fine, get a face full of shit from every shot though. they wont cycle any of my 10/22's but they will several of my other semis to various reliability levels. now cycling and stabalizing would be a nice thing!

Pretty dam short i shot my mates pistol which had the shortest barrel legal for a b cat apparently and that was still supersonic
I have herd reports of ported fully suppressed barrels like the savage shorty shooting supersonic at subsonic speeds
