Tried RL16 in my 20" barrel 7-08 with 140 gr NBT's and couldn't get any improvement on anything else, contrary to Alliant Powder load data which looked like a 100'/sec gain, maybe it's a different story with 162's, who knows.
Just going to take a look around the next bend...

I'll look at doing up both h414 and 2208 to compare

414 will get good speeds but it's pretty temp sensitive. Rl16 worked better for me in the 284.

How many grns of RE16 did you squeeze in with the 140BTs? I’m about to load up some for my 16inch Kimber and was going to try RE16 or Belmont760 that I have for the 284 Win seeing as it’s there already

I loaded RL16 in 0.5 gr steps from 46.5 gr for 2609 feet/sec to 47.5 gr for 2698 feet/sec; I only did one round/load because it was a basic check to see if there was any real advantage over 2209 for velocity and with comparable accuracy. Up to 47 gr was fine for pressure but 47.5 gr showed a light ejector stamp and the same velocity as 2209 at close on 2700 feet/sec, 5 shot group was about 3/4" with 5 different charge weights but I didn't take things any further as there was no gain. Remington SS Mountain Rifle with barrel cut to 20", loaded COAL 3.250 measured with Hornady comparator. We use the exact same load in a T3 cut to 18", in both rifles there's a lot of jump, 0.140" to 0.160" but it's very accurate in both, and a good hunting projectile too. 760 is very close to 2209 on the tables so probably worth a try.

CFE223 works well in short 708 barrels too mate, with 120 or 140s

    Hi Forestry,

I load Hornady 162gr ELD-M with CFE223 in my 16inch Kimber Montana. I'm happy with the combination.

Sorry I missed the 16" bit (too many 16's in one sentence for me) so I would guess RL16, 2209 and 760 would be too slow for you , more like CFE223 as GWH & Joelhenton say.

Mine load is 43.9 of N550, 162eldm, F210, about 10thou jump. running around 2670+. 1/2 or less group out of tikka t3 with 22" barrel. Just below the pressure sign.

Some good advice thanks. I just purchased some 7m08 dies off JoelA so almost ready to load up. Unfortunately my powder stocks are -all from my 284 with 2209/RE16/760 so not perfect for the short barrel.....might be time to add some CFE223 or 2206

Try 2208 with the 162eldm..standard 22" barrel will comfortably get 2650. Very good on game out to very reasonable distances. I use this combination a lot in a t3. 40.5grs at 71.5mm oal. Also 41.5grs works well but work up to it.

Thanks mate, be hoping these 162’s perform like I expect them too.
I’ve had a few in the 7mm’s and never seen the 162 and 150SP not shoot well.
These 150’s also fit in the magazine easily, so am happy, hoping they group well down at the 41, 41.5 or 42 weight for a consistent accurate load.

@Danny I tried RL17 with the 162 eldm, all loads shot sub MOA. Keen to try 2208 as well due to temp stability.
