Thread: Seeking Press Recommendations

    Seeking Press Recommendations

After thousands of rounds my old RCBS Rock Chucker has finally got too much wear in it. It is no longer able to maintain concentricity when sizing necks using Redding type-S bushing dies. These are the dies that don't have a sliding sleeve to hold the case concentric when offering the necks up to the bushings and pretty much rely on the press presenting the neck to the bushing just so-so so that the bushing will compress the neck in evenly. This it no longer can achieve because the ram is a now a bit wobbly.

Any recommendations please for a replacement? At the moment a new Rock Chucker at $400 is top of the list, but open to suggestions. I'm not needing a progressive press, just the basic 7/8x14, but true by design & manufacture.

Even if you only load one calibre you should seriously consider a turret press. Really convenient as you just set it all up once and rotate between dies.
I started with a Lyman turret and a few years ago upgraded to a Redding T7. Load everything from .223 to .338 Lapua on it, great bit of kit.

Good review on it here from the guys at Moss Pawn & Gun (iraqveteran8888)

That MEC marksman looks a good press. Should be well priced even with freight?

I've got nothing to compare it to as it's the only one I've ever used but the forster co-ax has worked brilliantly for me. Built solidly, looks like it will last a life time.

    Forster co-ax press also.
Doubt you can really go wrong with any new press though to be honest.

Thanks for the replies. In the meantime I've ordered a Redding Competition bushing die to replace the S-type.
I'll see if the sliding sleeve takes out the slop in the current press.

    +1

Never regretted buying mine but they cost an arm and a leg if you can find one.

Common issue on the challenger press, you can buy new ones easily enough. Titan reloading can help. Mine lasted about 8 years, now repaired I use it for decapping/ priming.

My Lee Classic Cast O-frame has been giving me excellent results. Cast iron frame and all-steel linkages, compound leverage easily handles full-length sizing of my .30/06 loads.

Still using a Lyman Spartan single stage C press purchased in 1973. If I had to I would replace it with another cast iron single stage. Lots of choices, but I would probably look for another Spartan. A second-hand one with less miles on the clock.
