I remember reading my first Rex Forrester book where he said the early cullers he worked with sighted their .303's in to be 1" high at 100 yards to get them 3' high at 100-yards. I still do similar after bore sighting to get me closer to where I want when I move out to 100 to sight in

This is for .222 Norma factory 50 grain sp

They used to print it on the pkt
FOR LINE OF SIGHT 1 1/2 INCHES ABOVE BORE

    25 YDS 100YDS 200YDS 300YDS
    -.8" 0.0 - 3.2" - 12.9 "

Well I guess I should have copied and pasted that to prevent it all looking like shite

Writtn another way .8 low at 25 yds is zero at 100 yds
3.2 low again at 200 and a big drop of 12.9 at 300yds

I want to know is there a formula for sighting in a rifle at say 40m or less or maybe at a stretch out to 60m
I have the following to shoot in want accuracy out to 300m
    222
    7mmWSM
    Roberts 257

I imagine the bullet type/weight/load etc will have some bearing on this but I do not want target accuracy just shoulder shooting most likely no further than 150 - maybe out to 300 occasionally.
So - I am thinking with a 222 for example if its 1" low at 50m it will be still rising and hit line of sight at say 150m and be low by 3-5" at 300m, but I am only guessing
Sight them in where you "guess/think" they should be then go for a drive/walk/ride somewhere & check them first before you try to shoot something at extended ranges, ie further than what you sighted them in for.

A shoulder is a big target & theory is a fine thing but means bugger all in this case, validation is everything......

yip....and it works out pretty good. its not hard to chuck a ruler alongside and take EDUCATED guess (see Ive learnt you go to highlight the important bits) IF you are out by a little bit it wont matter a huge amount at sub 200 yards..... oh and when you DO get it sighted where you want it....go back and check it at 25 yards......then remember what height you need to be......

Dad....whom while is/was no legendary culler or anything has shot more deer/pigs than any other recreational hunter I know and he always sighted everything absolutely bang on at 25y
He was quite confused when I shouted him a modern scope and zeroed his 06 at 200y.

end result is if you have a standard caliber and fairly standard scope height of 1.5-1.65" if you zero absolutely bang on at 25 you will effectively be zeroed at around 180-220y and are good for a shoulder 0-250 and more if you know your range and drops.

I use both KISS and dial up, both have their place.

One of the reasons I started this Thread - as I remember (just) mate had a Sako 270 and he always sighted it in at 17yards - dead on
    Used Win Silvertip 130gr
We shot in the light out to 200 - he did actually 90% of shooting because he hated seeing me waiving at the glowing eyes before I pulled the trigger

So I was hoping to extract a few options for my calibres with sim formula
