    Start loads for 243 / Vmax 87 ...

Me being lazy here, I know ....

I bought some Vmax 87's for my 243.

Anyone want to share their favourite load ? and / or success stories ?

    I'm using either AR 2206H, Ar2208 , ar2213sc or ar2225 ....

    Tim

    Tim.
I have no experience with 243.
But I would say that 2225 and 2213sc would be too slow for the 87gr projectiles.
Gut feeling is that 2208 would be well suited.

Those 87gr vmax's, would they be OK as a deer round or more for varmints?
    Sorry to change the thread

Word out there is they're a little too explosive for deer. I dont know coz I havent shot them yet @veitnamcam will have advice on this for sure

I'd guess they'd be awesome on anything with a well placed shot.

That said, Targex 80's for me have proven to be accurate and absolute killers. Head shot a goat last year and it destroyed the head. Neck shot a big billy and his head was only held on by his neck skin.

Targex 95's are SUPER accurate - overlapping group at 150 yards incl the cold barrel shot .. Cant WAIT to try the out on deer.

I will reply only because I was tagged in.
I haven't used the 87grvmax but I would not recommend it as a deer bullet, no doubt it would be possible to kill a deer with one but the vmax is specifically designed to not penetrate much and dump its energy in a few inches for emphatic kills on varmint size animals.

The 95gr Targex on the other hand works very well on even large deer, it is a bit soft at closer ranges but not excessively so and performs well at longish ranges.

Ive used 87g V Max from a 6BR at not too far off 243 speeds. They were a very good killer of goats. I did not shoot deer with them. Shooting large billies to kids was no problem. Lung and neck shots mostly. The rifle was a good shooter so bullet placement was very easy to get it right. Small game was also turned into nasty stuff with the V-Max.
I have spoken with another user of them up Gisborne way and they were successfully using them on deer and Gisborne deer are BIG as a rule.
In my 243AI Im running 105 Amax and 95g Partitions. Im happy with both bullets and have no desire to try the 87 V Max. As a rule I personally would not begin with a designed Varmint bullet for larger game.
Im running N165 and RL22. The 243 can run slow powders successfully if you are shooting heavier bullets in a suitable twist barrel. You're 1:10?
What do you want it to do?

I might look at the 90-95 accubond. I use the bowler BT in my 308 with 2208 and they go well

From what I have read the 87grain hdy hpbt and the sierra 85grain hpbt perform well on deer sized game. Im running ADI 2209 with good success using flat based speer hot cor 90 grainers at 44grains. I did try the 87hdy hpbt at 44grains it just didn't group as well as flat based bullets in the Remington.

If you go Targex, you're supporting a local guy - and they're bloody awesome ...
