140gr Nosler BTIPs with from memory around 56gr of 2213 going at 2920.
i just started with the book loadings and worked up till i was happy, so not much hassle, i seated to the book length aswell. i havent tried 140s yet just the 150s, the way is see it is that theres no point buying a magnum if you arent going to shoot heavier bullets, so thats what iv done but thats just me. let me know how you get on with the 140s.
I was shooting the 140 gr Accubonds at 2920fps with 2213sc. But then changed to the 150gr VLD's and they were going at 2935fps.
I could push the ABs faster but they weren't grouping well and ES went up to around 50fps IMSC
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
oh i also tried ar2209, was getting varied 2800-2900 with 57 gr charge, any more than that i was starting to show signs of pressure, and also blew a couple of primer pockets out so i canned that powder.
I've a Rem700 in 270WSM:
140 SST 3200ish
150 VLD 3160
Both with Retumbo. I did run 2217 for a while, but Retumbo give the same/more speed for less pressure. 71gr is what I'm running for both loads, and about 0.030-0.040" off. The Tikka has a deeper throat and can seat them out more, and in turn, get another grain or so in in the case until you run out of mag length and need to modify/replace the bolt stop.
The 150VLD is great and distance(as is the 140SST), if you normally shooting smaller animals up close, maybe a 130-140 SP/bonded bullet would be better. In saying that, the 150 made a spiker very dead on Saturday at 70m. Fell over and didn't get up.
2209 has a fast burn rate compared to 2225/Retumbo, hence why you pressure got so high so fast.
Speed isn't every thing. Like @puku mentioned, if the ES and accuracy works at a lower speed, use it. I guess I just tried to see how fast I could push them and found in this rifle, they grouped well too.
Thanks for all the info everyone, I think the Tikka has a strong case now to be saved from the gun shop!
