    Torn between two lo....

Team, have been lucky to get a little bit of a deal that works in perfectly for a project I've been contemplating for a while, this means....

My trusty .22-250 will be going into retirement, well will be up for sale when I get home...

I'm torn between 2 lovers for my next build, either .22-243 or 5.6x57RWS

RCBS dies for both will cost the same, RWS brass is surprisingly inexpensive compared to Norma or Lapua, have also scored some RWS 74g cone point projectiles as well.

Just trying to work out what is doing what. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking at 24" 1:8 twist, slightly heavy barrel, it looks like 2208, 2209 might be good powders...

    Cheers Craig

Is the 5.6 the one with odd diameter projectiles? If it is I'd do 22/243

As far as I'm aware it's std .224, the only difference I know is the neck on the case is a tad thicker.

There is another one similar but I think is .228 diameter. It has a very similar name.
I'd go with the 5.6x57R then, but then my next rifle is 7x65R so I am a bit biased towards different cartridges.
What rifle is it going in? A Ruger No1?

Yeah I'm a bit the same, had give thought to a 6.5x68RWS at one stage, the Europeans make some nice stuff.

No, will be leaving the No.1 as a .204, not a good rifle to play with. This will be in my traditional Ruger M77 Hawkeye...

How would the rimmed case go feeding out of a standard magazine?

22-243 dies are $165 from Gunworks.

Have you considered a 22 Terminator aka 22-204 ruger?

    I’m getting 3200 with a 75 amax in a 22” barrel with less than 30 gr 2208

Far better barrel life than my 22-243. All you need is a 223 sweater and 22 neck die to neck up the brass

It's down down to one of these 2, I'm not out popping off heaps of rounds with it so not too concerned on barrel life at this time.

If you go 22-243 win PM me.

I have data for a slow twist barrel and some brass you can have.

Australian Shooters Journal did a series of articles (around the 1980s) on modifying the 22 Martini to different cartridges. The 5.6x57 was the longest that could be chambered past the curve of the breech block. If I remember correctly, the 223Rem reamer can be used to make a 5.6x57 chamber by running the reamer in a bit deeper. Also, remembering, the thicker neck 5.6x57 brass was only in early rifles/cartridges and then the chamber specs were re-jigged to standard thickness brass. The cartridge fulfilled the minimum ft/lb qualifications for hunting chamois.
