what are a good basic set of digital scales?, Hornady ?

under $100 would be good

Just get a decent beam Scale. I had those Lee ones as I got them in a kit when I first started reloading, they're accurate enough but damn they're a pain in the ass to use. Have one of the original RCBS beam scales made by Ohaus now and it's much more user friendly. If you're gonna go digital I would suggest spending as much as you can as every sub $100 digital scale I have compared against a beam scale were very inconsistent

I was in the same boat as you, going mad with the Lee beam scales.

Bought the cheap Hornady digital scale and must say I have been very impressed. I have 3 check weights (small stainless nuts) that vary from 35gr to 70gr. I confirmed the weight of the check weights with three different highly accurate A&D lab scales. The Hornady is always bang on as long as allowed to warm up (pain in arse with auto off function), draft free and good batteries. Will drift if still warming or batteries getting low. I might have got lucky with my set...?

That being said I still always chec some charges with beam and verify the readings with the check weights a few times during charging.

Since the mid 90s I have used Lyman beam scales and found them very good, they settle quickly, and you can see the difference each granule of powder makes.
A year or so ago I bought a set of the Hornady electronic ones. I gave up using them after some charges were about 4 grains off (may have been caused by taking weight off when screen said PASS during calibration, instead of waiting a bit longer).
Recently I have been using them a bit, constantly checking readings and zero and they have generally been behaving. I think it pays to use them as if you don't trust them - check each charge weight and tare weight at least twice, and redo anything that doesn't give repeatable readings.
And visually check each case looks to be filled to the same level, which you should be doing anyway before seating projectiles, no matter what scales you use.

+1 for the decent beam scale. Get a damped one, the #2 Redding (originals aren't damped) or an RCBS or similar

I have been using the hornady auto charge for years.
I used to worry about how accurate and consistent they were but after always checking and they were bang on I now just go for it.
Man are they quick as when dispensing I seat a projectile from the last one filled.
It is no longer the onerous task it once was!

Smart Weigh GEM 20 for US$26.00 from Amazon. Bloody brilliant.

Got this recommended on a US reloading site they are good to two decimal places and can weigh down to the individual kernel. I use it to periodicaaly check my beam scale weights to ensure they are there or very close to it.
I may get to weighing every load but at the momment checking probably every 10 to 20 loads.
